STEM enrollment increases

Undergraduate enrollment in science and technology fields is increasing, while professional field enrollments are shrinking, according to a story by Inside Higher Education.

The story is based on data presented by Jerry A. Jacobs, a sociology professor at the University of Pennsylvania, and Linda Sax, an education professor at the University of California at Los Angeles.

From 2007 to 2011, the percentage of freshmen planning to enroll in STEM majors increased from 21.1 percent to 28.2 percent. The largest of that growth was in engineering, which saw a 57.1 percent increase, and biology, which had a 28.2 percent increase.
